Four marches written by the most famous march composer, John Philip Sousa will be featured on this first concert of 2007.   Special guest conductor will be the Honorable Mayor Tim Hurley. Children will be invited to march along while the band plays these well-known  musical numbers.  Age restriction for the children’s marches ~ one must be “young at heart”.  Bring a blanket or lawn chair for seating.  This concert has been moved indoors because of the high wind and threat of stormy weather—Center for the Arts location

The marches of Henry Fillmore will be featured on this concert.  Brad Jensen, High School band director in Hudson, IA and recipient of the Gold Star Teacher Award of Black Hawk County, 2007 will play selected solos on “Satchmo” a tribute to Louis Armstrong.  The children’s march will be led by Terry Routt.  To see the entire program, click on the picture of Fillmore.

Marching thru Summer with King  06/21/07 moved inside because of stormy weather. In addition to marches by Karl L. King, Assistant Professor of Trombone at the University of Northern Iowa.  Dr. Chris Buckholz,  will perform with the band as soloist on Fantastic Polka.    Dr. Buckholz is  a virtuoso crossover artist in both classical music and jazz.  He is an experienced performer and educator, touring internationally and recording extensively, and teaching students at high schools and universities around the United States.  Buckholz has a solo CD of original compositions to his credit, the 2006 release Muse, and is a performing artist for Conn-Selmer. The Iowa State legislature has declared the Trombone the premiere State Instrument.  The signing corresponded to the 105th anniversary of Meredith Willson's birth.   The trombone is significant to Iowa because of Glenn Miller who was born in Clarinda, Karl King from Fort Dodge and Meredith Willson from Mason City.
