Ø A note from gmail: Greetings! Just wanted to express how wonderful it is to have summer here and the band concerts back. The first concert of the season was wonderful! Really enjoyed Mayor Hurley directing and his comments. He did a great job! … Keep those marches coming!!! …. M. S. Bowser Ø On the July 3 concert, Dr. John Vallentine, Director of the School of Music, UNI and his wife passed the hat(s) to aid the tornado stricken Applington-Parkersburg HS music department. The donation gathered was $787.87. Thanks to all who contributed! Ø Congratulations to Elizabeth Zwanziger Page, flute, for receiving her PhD in French from Boston University. She was also selected by her peers, Foreign Language Teachers of Iowa, as the outstanding educator of 2008. Ø From Carolyn Bollman, tenor sax, about the flood destruction in the school where she is elementary band director: “Irving Elementary (Waverly, IA) got hit really hard in the flood and was stripped to a bare shell. We lost everything on the main level. We got all of my percussion up but lost all of my auxiliary percussion. We will not be returning to Irving. The admin is looking for options in the community. It is really sad to see your home for 9 months of the year destroyed.” Ø Ken Warren and Brandon Cannon were honored at the June 19 concert. Ken and Brandon are employees of the Center and always assist with the Waterloo Municipal Band’s set up and tear down. They worked almost around the clock for three days keeping up with their regular responsibilities in addition to helping save the artwork and building from the flood waters. THANKS!! Ø Eric Henely missed the third concert of the season because he is with the National Guard and helping the communities and citizens of Iowa who have recently been effected by the Iowa Flood of 2008. Deemed a 500 year flood in some areas. Ø Jean Potratz (euphonium) and her husband, Roy have been evacuated from their home on the West Fork of the Cedar near Finchford. It is very doubtful that they will be able to return to live there. At this time they are staying with Jean’s mother in Waterloo, Dorothy Guetzlaff. From Jean today 6/23/08: FEMA inspected the house yesterday afternoon. The old-house floors are so buckled that the house is totaled in our minds. The basement windows which had been sandbagged were blown in. All the doors would have to be replaced and also the interior walls… Ø The most recent news about first trombonist Craig Hancock is that he is recuperating at home from the fall which broke his back. He will not be able to finish the season with us. However, if all goes as expected he may be able to avoid surgery. Ø GOOD NEWS! Bill Shepherd and The Bill Shepherd Big Band performed at the Glenn Miller Festival in Clarinda, IA on Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14. If you know of any other Waterloo Municipal Band member who has been effected by the flood, or if you are aware of other news worthy circumstances, please contact any one of the Board Members so that we might include the news on this website.
